Activities

The Directorate of Macro Planning and Statistical Analysis, BAPPENAS, held an online workshop related to the use of the Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP) in the Global Economic Model (GEM) on 6 November 2020. The workshop is part of a comprehensive capacity development programme provided by Oxford Economics under the ARISE+ Indonesia programme to BAPPENAS for economic modelling and forecasting. The initial phase of the programme mainly focused on upgrading of the GEM and the Inter-Regional Trade Model (IRM). The workshop completed the gradual handing-over process of the GEM to the technicians of the Directorate of Macro Planning and Statistical Analysis who performed the simulations with the collaboration of Oxford Economics experts.

The integration of the GTAP into the GEM will allow BAPPENAS to make simulations on the impact of trade agreements and trade negotiations on Indonesia, and in particular on sectors of the economy. The training is timely given Indonesia’s active engagement in trade negotiations, notably the Indonesia – EU CEPA and the Indonesia – Australia CEPA which were recently completed.

In addition, with the current pandemic, it is important to have a sophisticated economic model to support the government in developing policies that are relevant and effective in supporting the private sector. Further support is therefore foreseen under ARISE+ Indonesia in 2021 to accompany BAPPENAS in using the economic models developed to further strengthen it analytical skills in support of policy development.
