Kulonprogo Jogja Coconut Sugar

The Kulonprogo Jogja Coconut Sugar is produced from nira, translucent sap extracted from the nectar of young coconut flowers. The nira is collected twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening, and obtained from coconut trees grown only in the defined geographical area of Kabupaten Kulonprogo, in Central Java.

The nira extraction technique to make Kulonprogo Jogja Coconut Sugar consists in a clean bumbung (a bamboo cup) installed and secured to the coconut tree, with the addition of about half a tablespoon of laru (plant-based preservatives). Each bumbung is regularly replaced with clean ones.

The unique taste of Kulonprogo Jogja Coconut Sugar is due to the natural environment, soil and climate within Kabupaten Kulonprogo where the coconut trees are grown and harvested.

Established in 2012, Masyarakat Perlindungan Indikasi Geografis Gula Kelapa Kulonprogo Jogja (MPIG-GKKP Jogja) is the official PGI lodger that manages the artisans producers and processors community of Gula Kelapa Kulonprogo Jogja. MPIG-GKKP Jogja represents 124 farmers group and local cooperatives, which consist of over 4,000 artisans, nira collectors, individual farmers, members of cooperatives and traders.

The participation of Kulonprogo Jogja Coconut Sugar to Terra Madre is sponsored by ARISE+ Indonesia, a technical assistance programme funded by the European Union that aims to strengthen the capacity of government institutions and stakeholders on a wide range of areas within international trade, private sector competitiveness and business environment.
