The long-awaited Indonesian Blue Economy Roadmap 2023-2045 was officially launched and showcased during the ASEAN Blue Economy Forum hosted by the Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas) in the picturesque Belitung Island on July 3, 2023. The roadmap's development was made possible through the valuable contribution of ARISE+ Indonesia, which collaborated closely with Bappenas to conduct three significant studies as part of the Blue Economy Roadmap: the Development of the Blue Economy in Indonesia Based on the Supply and Demand Framework, the Indonesian Blue Economy Index (IBEI), and the IBEI Projection.

The Indonesian Blue Economy Roadmap charts a course towards building a diverse and sustainable maritime economy for Indonesia, prioritising the health and resilience of ocean ecosystems and ensuring benefits for present and future generations. It provides comprehensive direction on leveraging the blue economy's potential to boost productivity and drive the realisation of Indonesia Vision 2045.

The forum was inaugurated by the esteemed Minister of National Development Planning, Suharso Monoarfa, highlighting the Blue Economy Roadmap's potential to become the new engine for ASEAN development. The event saw the participation of distinguished delegates from ASEAN member countries, international organisations, and private sectors, fostering a platform for collaboration and exchanging ideas.

"Blue economy has great potential in ASEAN, as more than 66% of the area in Southeast Asia is oceans and seas. Indonesia is committed to realising the ASEAN Blue Economy Framework as one of the Priority Economic Deliverables (PED) in 2023 to boost inclusive and sustainable high growth to support the upgrading of ASEAN nations' income status," Minister Suharso Monoarfa said.

In a separate statement, Alessandro Martinatto, the Team Leader of ARISE+ Indonesia TA 2, congratulated Bappenas for the successful launch of the Indonesian Blue Economy Roadmap.

"The European Union shares a strong commitment with Indonesia to implement the Blue Economy, harnessing the immense potential of marine and coastal resources while safeguarding the preservation and resilience of valuable marine ecosystems. The launch of Indonesia's Blue Economy Roadmap will open up potential collaborations and investment opportunities between the EU and Indonesia, particularly in the field of renewable ocean energy. This initiative aligns with the EU's priority to produce clean energy for a sustainable future," said Mr Martinatto.
